Introduction:
- The National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC), along with the affiliated Central Committee of the CPC, are in theory the highest leading organs of the CPC. The congress usually convenes every five years. Since 1987, the meeting is held in the months of October or November. The National Congress can convene when deemed necessary by the Central Committee or when more than one-third of the provincial level organizations request it. Only under special circumstances will the congress be postponed.
Responsibilities:
- Examines the report submitted by the CPC Central Committee
- Examines the work report of the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection
- Deliberates and adopts amendments to the CPC Constitution
- Elects the Party’s Central Committee
- Elects the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection
20th National Congress of CPC
- The most recent gathering was the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China was held at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing from October 16-22, 2022
- 2,296 delegates participated and represented an estimated 96 million CPC members
- Preparations for the 20th National Congress began in 2021 and ended in July 2022. In 2021, local and provincial party organizations began electing delegates for the congress, as well as preparing party documents
