Introduction:

  • The Central Committee of the Communist Party of China is a political body that comprises the top leaders of the Communist Party of China (CPC). Members are nominally elected once every five years by the National Congress of the Communist Party of China. In practice, the selection process is done privately, usually through consultation between the Party’s Politburo and its corresponding Standing Committee

Responsibilities

  • Convenes the National Congress of the Communist Party of China
  • Carries out the decisions made by the National Congress
  • Leads Party work and represents the Party internationally
  • Elects the General Secretary and the members of the Politburo, Standing Committee of the Political Bureau and the Central Military Commission
  • Oversees the work of national organizations of the Party

20th National Congress of CPC

  • The 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China was held at the Great Hall of the People, Beijing, between October 16 and 22, 2022. 2,296 delegates represented the Party’s 96 million members. Preparations for the 20th National Congress began in 2021 and ended in July 2022.

General Secretary

  • The General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China is head of the Communist Party of China, and the highest-ranking official within the People’s Republic of China. The General Secretary is a standing member of the Politburo and head of the Secretariat. The officeholder is usually considered the “paramount leader” of China.

Responsibilities of the General Secretary

  • Manages the work of the Secretariat of the Central Committee
  • Calls sessions for both the Political Bureau and its Standing Committee
