Functions

  • The Academy of Broadcasting Science (ABS), founded in 1958, is a subsidiary of the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television (SAPPRFT), the regulatory body with overall responsibility for China’s broadcasting, cinema and electronic media sector. Fully funded by the state and dedicated to the benefit of the general public, ABS is China’s leading scientific research institute in the field. It provides technical support for SAPPRFT in the formulation of technology strategy, planning and decision-making. ABS provide a solid backbone for a number of essential services: research and development in China’s broadcasting sector; management of major projects; training and the development of talent; and the provision of a significant window for technology cooperation and communication between China’s broadcasting industry and the rest of the world
  • ABS fulfills a number of varied and important roles: researching on advanced and strategic technology; taking on frontier R&D projects; developing broadcast applications technology; providing engineering and technical consulting and solutions; establishing an innovation-base and experimental platform for broadcasting technology; launching domestic and international broadcast technical communication and cooperation; initiating high-tech enterprises; and commercializing research outcomes
  • ABS’s research activities cover the full range of broadcasting and electronic media, and involve core technologies as well as systems, standards, and solutions. The service covers the entire industry and aims to provide strong technical support for the development of China’s broadcast and media sector
